ZACH INTERNSHIPS ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE

Zachary Scott Theater Center is looking to fill internship positions for current college students as well as recent graduates and for individuals with some theatrical experience who are looking for new opportunities to build their skills while working with a professional theatre company.

Internships are available in the following areas:

An internship at ZACH provides an invaluable experience in professional, non-profit theatre as well as an opportunity to expand your administrative and production skills. While we can not provide housing or honorarium, the valuable networking opportunities here in Austin's thriving theatre community are a significant benefit. We are also willing to supervise Interns interested in working with us for credit at their university. Internships are 10-12 weeks in length and require that the Intern work approx. 20 hours per week. All Interns must have flexible work schedules. Arts Administration & Management

Development Intern

Learn the fundamental skills of building board and donor relations and gain experience in the research, solicitation and acknowledgment of a diverse community of donors--from government grants, foundations and individual contributions to major corporate sponsorship and fund-raising events. The development intern participates fully in the activities of a busy fundraising office: help plan special events, write grants, research funding opportunities, and help track and acknowledge gifts. Candidates should have excellent writing and communication skills and be computer proficient.

Marketing/PR Intern

Gain experience in marketing, public relations, and media relations. Assist with market research and promotions, distribute marketing materials, administer and process patron surveys, participate in event planning and execution, and provide clerical assistance and errand support. Candidates should have excellent computer and organizational skills, good writing and communication skills, and enjoy working with a wide variety of people.

Theater Management Intern

Work with the Managing Director on day-to-day activities in a variety of departments.  Duties may include attending and helping arrange board & staff meetings and special events, assisting the marketing and development departments in compilation, analysis and distribution of materials, and providing production and clerical assistance.  Candidates should have excellent computer and organizational skills, good writing and communication skills, and enjoy working with a wide variety of people.

Facilities Management Intern

The Facilites Intern provides support to the Facilities Manager. Duties will include maintaining a Project/Work request file, scheduling, and making updates in an Excel spreadsheet. The intern will also assist with updating Employee Key Allocation report and updating the Brinks Security code file, both maintained in an excel spreadsheet. Other duties will include organizing facilities files, service agreements, and vendor contracts and files. Candidates should be proficient in MS Word, Excel & Outlook, have good computer and organizational skills, and enjoy working with a wide variety of people. No hands on work required. Theatre Education

Performing Arts School/Playspace Intern

Assist the Performing Arts School in day-to-day activities, including student sign-up for classes, booking for Playspace performances, facilitating theater workshops, discussions and training, and maintaining department databases and archives. In some cases, interns may assist in developing curriculum, receive hands-on training from teaching artists, and possibly teach classes.

Project Interact Intern

Assist Project InterAct, Zach's Educational touring company, including booking & organizing school visits, creating study guides, acting as a production assistant in rehearsal, and helping the stage manager on school visits. For those interested in children's theatre performance, there is also the opportunity to understudy character roles.

Strong candidates for both education departments will have had experience as a theater artist and educator, should work well and confidently with the public, and have excellent organizational, writing, and communication skills.

Production & Technical Department

Production/Company Management Intern

Observe rehearsals, maintain communication with artists & designers, and assist in research and development of specific projects and routine clerical functions. Schedule general audition appointments. Respond to mail or phone inquiries about casting or other employment opportunities, maintaining files and correspondence. Initiate contact with contracted artists, providing hands-on facilitation of all transport and housing requirements. Manage multiple projects and deadlines. Candidates should have a warm personality, good communication skills, and a sense of humor.

Costume Intern

Serve as an assistant to costume designers, pull rentals, and coordinate production paperwork and research. The costume intern assists in the shop with construction, shopping for shows, and maintenance of stock, as well as assisting with running crew and daily wardrobe maintenance as needed. Opportunities to learn more about crafts or wig maintenance may be available with certain shows. Fast, accurate sewing skills and a working knowledge of costume construction are required. A portfolio and/or examples of a candidate's work are preferred.

Stage Management Intern

Work side by side with Equity stage managers, directors, and actors. Be involved in the entire rehearsal and performance process for mainstage productions. The stage management intern works in all aspects of stage management, with primary duties in the rehearsal hall and as part of the running crew.

Technical Production Intern

Construct scenery and set pieces in accordance with plans. Assist in research & resolving problems involved with mainstage projects. Help with the installation of scenery on stage and in maintenance of mechanical and structural aspects of scenery during run of play. Experience with wood construction and the use of standard shop tools are required. Welding and rigging experience is also a plus. Ability to solve problems and work independently is essential. Some opportunities may exist for those interested in shadowing:

  • Master Electrician
    Develop drafting, paperwork and computer skills directly associated with productions.  Duties include hanging, focusing, equipment maintenance, special projects, and the programming/running of shows. Prior experience is required as well as knowledge of computer light boards.

  • Sound Programmer
    Receive experience and training by working in support of the sound designer. Interns may run performances as sound board operator & assist in design of regular season productions. Prior experience is required as well as knowledge of sound board operation.
