The Topfer Theatre Challenge

The Dave Steakley Dream Fund

The Topfer Theatre has now been operating for over a year, and the impact on ZACH Theatre has been astounding. We have successfully increased our operating budget to over $7M through the influx of new ticket patrons and donors. Reflecting the acclaim of our state-of-the-art facility, we received the Austin Business Journal’s 2013 Community Impact Award for new Architecture.

The Topfer Theatre’s new mechanical systems have been a boon for Producing Artistic Director Dave Steakley and allowed him to showcase his artistry and upgrade the quality of our mainstage productions. The new theatre also enabled ZACH to expand its Theatre for Families Series by freeing the Kleberg Theatre for year-round use. In addition, the adjacent Bobbi Pavilion has made ZACH a coveted destination for special events and corporate rentals.

Recently, we received two generous gifts of $150,000 each from our Campaign Leadership, Bettye Nowlin and Mort Topfer. This additional $300,000 allowed us to pay off our building costs, so we are now in a position to steer remaining Campaign gifts into a capitalization fund for artistic and production enhancements, and for campus-wide facility support: The Dave Steakley Dream Fund.

All new Campaign gifts will fuel this new fund, and with these proceeds Dave can continue to produce the artistic excellence we’ve come to associate with our Topfer Theatre productions. The fund can help support the added costs of the larger sets and casts as well as balancing our longtime favorite Austin actors and designers with fresh artistic talent from New York and other major regional theatres. This fund can also support our production acquisitions and equipment needs and help with facility maintenance.

With this extra investment, Dave will be able to consistently mount ZACH’s future mainstage productions on a level that is on par with our regional theatre colleagues. This is imperative in making ZACH a more viable co-producing partner with other regional theatres. In addition, we will be favorably positioned to incubate new works that are mounted later in New York or at other major theatres.
