The Performing Arts School believes in life skills through theatre skills placing emphasis on creating well-rounded people capable of artistic and self-expression through body, voice and mind. All programs end in a final sharing for family and friends featuring skills, exercises and scenes students have worked on during the week.

CREATIVE DRAMA | Age 3.5-Grade 2
Creative Drama engages students by allowing them to play and explore through the limitlessness of their imaginations. Students learn ensemble skills and creative problem-solving while activating the tools of the actor: body, voice and imagination. On the last day of each camp, family and friends are invited to attend a Sharing showcasing the process of class including favorite exercises, highlighting skills learned and presenting student created stories. STORY DRAMA | Ages 3.5-4.5
June 17-24 & July 15-19
Each day in Story Drama students step into a different book from the best of children’s literature. Class starts by exploring the themes, characters and environments of the story through creative play. Then students read the book and as an ensemble investigate their own solutions to the story’s problem. Students learn to work together, creatively problem solve and share ideas.
ARTSPLOSION | Ages 4-7
Students divided into age appropriate groups
In this half-day program, students rotate through three different art forms focusing on common vocabulary and thematic elements. In Visual Art students use the theme to explore artistic vocabulary, mediums and a new art project each day. In Movement students embody the theme to learn physical control, dance technique and creative expression. In Creative Drama students bring the theme to life as they work with their teacher to travel into their imaginations to become characters and solve problems while learning acting skills and cooperation. This summer features two exciting themes:
JUNE 24-28 | MYTHS & MONSTERS: Dragons and fairies and tricksters, oh my!
HALF-DAY IMAGINATION EXPLORATION | Ages 4-5
Go on an adventure this summer! In Imagination Exploration, students start with an imaginary character with an imaginary problem and the story grows from there. By learning theatre games and creating unique characters, students travel through their imagination to an orginal world that they create based on the theme of the week. Students gain skills in sharing ideas, giving and taking focus, and creative expression.
JUNE 17-21 | BEATLE MANIA: Take an adventure through the grooviest tunes – frolic through Strawberry Fields, take a yellow submarine to an octopus’s garden or help Sergeant Pepper form the Lonely Hearts Club Band.
JULY 15-19 | WONDERLAND: Fall down the Rabbit Hole and discover a whole new world. Meet the Red Queen, have tea with the Mad Hatter, riddle with a caterpillar and more!
JULY 22-26 | OPPOSITES: Through movement, art projects and creative adventures students will explore hot & cold, heavy & light, straight, curvy & more!

JULY 29 - AUGUST 2 | STEP UP: Are you ready to dance? Step Up is back and “Booming” for its second summer at ZACH. This camp is all about rhythm, dance and creating fun Hip Hop characters.
AUGUST 5-9 | ROCKSTAR X: It’s a “Party in the USA” at ZACH! Due to popular demand, Rockstar is back for its 10th summer. Students will rock out to their favorite tunes, dance their favorite jigs, and use their imaginations to create their own Rock stars.
AUGUST 19-23 | MYTHS AND MONSTERS: Adventure through the world of myths where you could meet a flying Pegasus, friendly Giants and magical unicorns as you battle the great dragon.
ACT THE STORY | Age 5-Grade 2
Act-the-Story allows students to experience well-loved stories of all kinds from the inside. Using acting exercises, art projects and imagination, students will read a story and then create their own version as an ensemble. Students gain skills in vocal projection and enunciation, creating ensemble and listening.
JULY 8-12 | TRICKSTER TALES: Get your bag o’ tricks ready for this camp full of tales that will make you laugh and tickle your clever bone. Meet characters like Anansi the spider, Brer Rabbit and pesky coyotes in the world of Hoaxes.
AUGUST 12-16 | DR SEUSS: Jump inside the world of Dr. Seuss – save the trees with the Lorax, run amok with the Cat-in-the-Hat or just have a tweetle beetle puddle paddle battle!
THEATRE SKILLS | Grades 3-8
Theatre Skills classes offer students a chance to explore all the fun that theatre offers while gaining confidence, sharing ideas and learning the fundamental tools of being an actor. On the last day of each class, family and friends are invited to attend a Sharing showcasing the process of class including favorite exercises, highlighting skills learned and presenting scenes or musical numbers. CREATE-A-PLAY* | Grades 3-7
In true ZACH tradition, CREATE-A-PLAY offers students a chance to shine in an original play written by them! Each morning students will rotate through classes in voice, movement and playwrighting then put those skills to use in their afternoon rehearsal. With a focus on acting, story-telling and character creation, students will work as an ensemble to devise, rehearse and stage a workshop production of an original script.
JUNE 10-14 | HOGWARTS: Back by popular demand! ZACH transforms into the most famous wizard school of all time as students work together to create their own Hogwarts character and create an original story.
JUNE 17-21 | BEATLE MANIA: Get out your mustache and your British accent and join the band. Using Beatle’s hits as our inspiration, we will create original plays featuring the Walrus and the Eggmen, Yellow Submarines and much much more.
JULY 1-3 | WILD WEST: Head ‘em up and move ‘em out as we create our own cowboy/girl characters and the greatest western tall tale ever told.
JULY 29 - AUGUST 2 | STEP UP!: “Boom, Boom, Boom” is all you here from the bass in ZACH’s studios. Step up is back and “Booming” for its second summer at ZACH. This camp is all about rhythm, dance, and creating Hip Hop characters.
AUGUST 5-9 | ROCKSTAR X: We are going to “Party Rock” again for ZACH’s 10th Rockstar summer! Students will not only rock out to their favorite tunes, but they will transform into their own rockstar in an original rock-umentary. Caution…this camp includes endless acting, singing, and dancing!
AUGUST 19-23 | MYTHS AND MONSTERS: Become the inventor of your own monster myth! Mash up mythical tales to create your own epic monster story. Will the Cyclops battle Dracula or Satyrs trick Werewolves or Sirens save Frankenstein? You decide!
INTRO TO MUSICAL THEATRE | Grades 3-5
JUNE 24-28 & JULY 22-26
For any student who loves to sing or dance, this class offers a chance to find out what Musical Theatre is all about. Students spend half a day with an acting teacher learning theatre games, character creation, and story structure. The second half of the day is spent with a vocal coach and choreographer learning the basics of vocal and dance technique, working toward putting together a routine from a well-loved musical. Choose from: MULAN and HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3.
THEATRE ACADEMY | Grades 3-8
JULY 8-19 (2 WEEK CAMP) & AUGUST 12-16
This camp is for students who are ready to explore the world of actor training. In this fun and focused camp, students are immersed in specialized training in improv, scene study, Shakespeare, voice, movement, and musical theatre each day. The week ends with a showcase featuring contemporary and classic scene work, improv games and a musical theatre routine.
MUSICAL THEATRE BOOTCAMP | Grades 5-7 & 8-12
JUNE 24-28 & AUGUST 19-23
This class teaches students what it means to be a triple threat! Each day, students spend 90 minutes with an acting coach, 90 minutes with a vocal coach and 3 hours with a choreographer learning what it takes to become a member of a musical theatre ensemble. By focusing on large group numbers, students are challenged to create backstory and meaning for their character, support the action of the story and shine as an individual and as an ensemble. This class culminates in a revue of several group numbers from great musicals. This summer’s revues are: GUYS AND DOLLS and HAIRSPRAY.
SUMMER PRE-PROFESSIONAL TRACK | Grades 4-12
Pre-Professional courses are designed for students entering grades 4-12 looking for a more intense program with a commitment to deepening skills and technique preparing them for audition, performance and career opportunities. On the last day of each class, family and friends are invited to attend a Sharing showcasing the process of class including favorite exercises, highlighting skills learned and presenting scene work or musical numbers. ACTING INTENSIVES | Grades 4-6, 7-12 & 9-12
In each Acting Intensive students spend half a day with an acting coach learning the fundamentals of acting: pursuing objectives, overcoming obstacles, utilizing tactics and creating dynamic characters. The other part of the day is spent with a specialty teacher in MUSICAL THEATRE, IMPROV, AUDITION TECHNIQUE or SCENE STUDY. This class fulfills an Acting 1 prerequisite for upper level classes.
JUNE 10-14 & JULY 22-26 | MUSICAL THEATRE: Students work with a vocal coach and choreographer to study vocal technique and develop their musical theatre skills. The last day sharing features 32 bars of an individual song, a group number and a showcase of acting skills. Choose from: FAME and CHICAGO.
JUNE 17-21 | IMPROV: Students gain confidence while acquiring the fundamental skills to create scenes and stories using nothing but their imaginations and each other - all completely on-the-spot.
JULY 8-12 | AUDITION TECHNIQUE: Students learn the basics of auditioning including monologue work, cold reading skills and how to present oneself to directors and casting agents. By the end of the class, all students will have a one-minute audition piece in their repertoire as well a guidebook for auditioning including several sample monologues.
AUGUST 12-16 | SCENE STUDY: Using scripts from both contemporary and classic texts, students break down beats, students learn and embody vocabulary words such as character objectives, beats, tactics and script analysis; walking away with many tools they can use for any future play they will work on.
PERFORMANCE LABS* | Grades 4-7 & 8-12
Pre-requisite: 2 sessions of Acting 1 or an audition
JULY 29-AUGUST 2 & AUGUST 5-9
With a focus on acting skills, script analysis and storytelling, Performance Labs allow students to explore great scripts in a workshop setting. As an ensemble, students work with their director to choose the scenes, cast the play, create scenery, gather props and costumes to present as much of a play as they can in one-week! Grades 4-7 tackle Louis Sachar’s HOLES while Grades 8-12 take on William Shakespeare’s ROMEO & JULIET.
PRODUCTION CLASSES | Grades 4-12
By audition only
Working with professional directors, designers and artisans, students will apply their classroom training to the stage. They will learn rehearsal etiquette, the rehearsal process, how to interact with designers and the discipline to perform over several weeks.
A play is big commitment. Students should be prepared to attend every rehearsal (any conflicts must be listed at time of audition), meet memorization deadlines, and come to rehearsal prepared with all required supplies (the director will tell you about this on or before the first rehearsal).
MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM | by William Shakespeare

Find yourself in the forest with mischievous fairies, young lovers, a royal court and a band of bumbling actors. This Classic comedy full of magic and misunderstandings is one of the Bards most beloved play. Tackle Shakespearean language as you learn the art of acting in a classic play.

If you had one wish what would it be? Join us in the woods as we follow Jack, Cinderella, Little Red and more on their journeys to find their wish. Auditions - Production Class Auditions have past
All students wanting to participate in our Production Classes must attend a general audition and perform a one-minute memorized monologue from a play. All students who wish to be considered for either INTO THE WOODS JR. or WILLY WONKA JR. must also prepare 32-bars of music to be sung with accompaniment (ZACH will provide an accompanist; please bring sheet music). Callbacks: some students may be asked back to a second round of auditions for individual plays. If you are not called back, this does not mean you will not be cast. Please note if you are not available for callbacks at the time of audition. Production Class callbacks will be held on Sunday, March 31 2-7 p.m.
Casting: students cast in our Production Classes will be notified no later than Monday, April 8. Students cast must register with a $100 deposit by Friday, April 12 in order to hold their spot. If we have not heard from you by that date, we will replace your student. Students who are not cast will be considered as alternates for any actor who drops out.
AUDITION WORKSHOPS | Grades 3-6 & 7-12
In each 90 minute workshop, students will learn what an audition is and how to prepare. Students will learn 16 bars of music appropriate for a musical theatre audition as well as experience a sample dance call. All students will walk away with an Audition Handbook including many age-appropriate sample monologues. Parents are welcome to attend. Workshops will be held on Wednesday, March 6th at 4 p.m.& 6 p.m. Call the office at 512.476.0594 ext. 236 to reserve your spot. Cost for the audition workshop is $30.
PRE-PROFESSIONAL CLASS AUDITIONS
Students entering 4th grade in Fall 2013 and above may audition for classes for which they have not completed the prerequisites. Students may audition at the Production Class audition dates above, or may call the office to arrange individual auditions Tuesday – Thursday, 9 a.m.- 5 p.m.
EXTENDED CARE
- Morning Extended Care for full-day camps starting at 8:30am for $25/week
- Afternoon Extended Care for full-day camps until 5:30pm for $25/week

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
The Junior Counselors Program is a volunteer opportunity for high school students interested in helping to create amazing theatre experiences with pre-school and elementary age children. Participants will learn the ins and outs of a professional theatre training program while aiding students' creation of orginal stories, characters and design elements. In one week you will receive credit for over 40 volunteer hours. To apply or for more information please click here.
